Practice Management System Improved Service and Satisfies Clients
- [Locus Practice Management System]

Barrie Williams, David Thwaites

Specialised Advantage

Barrie Williams, David Thwaites

A specialised software supplier with a legal focus is first priority for law firms Barrie Williams and David Thwaites.

The two law firms, who share an office in Rosanna Vic, both invested in a Locus Practice Management System in 1991 and have remained Locus clients since.

Sole practitioners, Barrie Williams’ and David Thwaites’ main areas of practice are conveyancing, business law, deceased estate, wills, litigation and family law. David reviewed the firm’s investment:

“Locus has been on-site for ten years and during that time it has provided us with accurate, up-to-date information. It has cut down on staff time by creating accuracy and quick retrieval for us.”

Williams & Thwaites emphasised the need for small practices to maximise their technology investment. Manual processes had, for them, become unaffordable. The firm therefore recognised from the outset Locus had to be a worthwhile long-term investment. In retrospect, Barrie realised, part of that investment, is also reliable one-on-one support:

“We’ve had a very good association with Locus for the past ten years. Locus staff are a pleasure to work with. When you have issues with the software, they find the answers and get back to you.” David agreed.

“A supplier needs to provide ongoing support and be up-to-date with what is going on. The law firm should not have to notify the supplier of what is new.”

From their experience, David and Barrie advised not only to invest in reliable suppliers but suppliers who provide specialised legal software. The firm should consider:

“Whether the supplier has experience in the market? Do they know the rules and will they revise the software as the law changes? Andmore importantly, does the software they are supplying satisfy the trust account rules, such as, the inability to overdraw the trust account?”

In view of cost, David admitted:

“I’ll look at it and compare but it is also important to look at what’s behind the product.”

Would you recommend Locus to other firms?

“Yes, we have (recommended Locus) and we are quite happy to do so because Locus has the best track record I have known in ten years.”

“The staff are learning new skills and their job satisfaction has increased. Overall, it is a feel-good experience for the firm that we are doing a better job.”

With Locus, Williams & Thwaites found the Practice Management System has made the firm more efficient, with the added advantage of strengthening their professional reputation:

“Locus has changed the way the practice works and we do provide a better service to clients.”
